These are the original census schedules for 1790. Schedules for some counties are missing. No schedules are known to exist for Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Virginia; apparently they were destroyed during the British attack on Washington during the War of 1812. The 1790 schedules for Virginia, which appear on microfilm publication T498, were reconstructed from State enumerations. The 1790 census was taken based on the Federal District Court districts rather than on the state boundaries. Thus there were 16 districts enumerated but only 12 are extant. The census format included the name of the head of household, the number of free white males under 16 and 16 or older, the number of free white females of any age, the name of a slave owner, and number of slaves owned by that person. 12 rolls.
